International Scientific Seminar "Digitalization and Loneliness"

September 28, 2022 Department of "Sociology" at Eurasian national university named after L.N. Gumilyov organized a scientific seminar "Digitalization and loneliness".

The invited speakers were representatives of Uskudar University (Turkey, Istanbul): Ebulfayz Suleymanoglu Doctor of Sociological sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Nihan Kalkandeler  Doctor of Sociological sciences. The seminar was attended by undergraduates and doctoral students, teaching staff of the department.

Ebulfayz Suleymanoglu spoke about a panel study of the phenomenon of loneliness conducted in Turkey. Turkish scientists are actively studying the impact of digitalization and the pandemic on the spread of loneliness, studying the paradox of increasing digital communication between people and the “pandemic of loneliness”.

Nihan Kalkandeler spoke about the results of the study, which was attended by more than 7 thousand respondents from all regions of Turkey. According to the results of the study, women and young people feel the loneliest  more than 60%. “Sometimes they feel lonely” 39% of respondents, “always”  more than 5% of respondents. At the same time, the study showed that the increase in the Internet use during the pandemic was noted by more than 70%, the increase in feelings of loneliness in the same period was more than 37%.

The participants of the scientific seminar asked questions about the current research, their methodology, new trends in the study of the topic of loneliness in connection with the socio-political changes and conflicts taking place in the world.
