Call for papers

On April 28, 2022 at 14.00, the Department of Religious Studies of the L.N. Gumilyev Eurasian National University, jointly with the N. Nazarbayev Center for the Development of Interfaith and Intercivilizational Dialogue, holds an International Scientific and Practical Conference “Religious Studies in Kazakhstan within the Context of Global Religious Studies: the Path Travelled, Traditions, Development Trends” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the opening of the specialty “Religious Studies” and coincided with the VII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions to be held in September, 2022 in the city of Nur-Sultan.

            In the context of growing turbulence and conflict in the modern world, it is of particular importance to promote a scientific approach in religious studies in order to reduce the risks of politicization of the religious sphere of society and human life. The purpose of this conference is to comprehend the Kazakhstani and world experience in the development of religious studies, including established scientific paradigms and research strategies, achievements, current areas of research, problematic issues and prospects for further development in the face of the challenges of the modern world. Considerable attention is planned to be paid to the scientific and pedagogical aspect of the development of modern religious studies in order to form the relevant competencies among the youth and a responsible attitude to the field of religion. 

            Scientists, experts, Ph.D. candidates, undergraduates, students interested in the study of the designated topic are invited to participate in the conference.

            The main directions of the conference are following:

            1. Interreligious, interfaith and state-confessional relations at the present stage: issues of interaction in search of stability, peace for the realization of spiritual values in the modern world.

            2. Kazakhstan as a place of trials, suffering and sacrificial religious service for believers in the Soviet era. Restoration of the memory of the repressed clergy and laity.

            3. History of religions in the context of promoting the dialogue of cultures and religions: research strategies and teaching methodology.

            4. Religious studies and theology: opposition or possibilities of interaction and complementarity.

            5. From the specialty “Religious Studies” to “Religion and Theology”: continuity or paradigm shift in religious education. Religious studies and Theology. 

            6. Islamic studies in the context of the development of religious studies.

            7. Actual problems of modern religious studies.

Conference working languages: Kazakh, Russian, English, Turkish, Arabic.

Requirements for the articles: text editor Microsoft Word 1997-2003, 2007, 2010. Volume up to 8 pages, Times New Roman, size 14. Margins: left – 3 cm, top and bottom – 2 cm, right – 1.5 cm, single line spacing; headings shall be in bold capital letters. The title is separated from the text by a space. Above the title in the right part, the name and surname of the author shall be indicated (in bold italics), below – the position, academic degree and academic title; notes and a list of references shall be indicated at the end of the article. The list of references is placed at the end of the text and is compiled in accordance with the order in which the works are mentioned (continuous numbering). References to the literature in the text shall be placed in “square” brackets, in the form of a number corresponding to the number of this work in the list of references. When using quotes, please be sure to indicate the source page, for example: [1, p. 138], in case of using Internet sources, indicate the link to the source and the date of access (example: Department of Religious Studies. URL: https://fsn.enu.kz/subpage/religiovedeniya, accessed 18.03.2021). After the list of references, the full name of author/authors, article title and abstract in English shall be written. 

Full name of the participant shall be mentioned in the title of application and article documents. 

The conference will be held in a mixed offline and online format. A link to the conference will be sent additionally to each registered participant.

As a result of the conference, a collection of scientific publications will be published. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select reports when compiling the program and the final collection. Papers that do not correspond to the conference topics and technical requirements will be rejected.
